The history of Toyota doesn’t begin with cars; it begins with looms. The Toyoda Automatic Loom Works was founded in Japan in — by Sakichi Toyoda. In the late 1920s, Toyoda encouraged his son to travel the world to learn more about car manufacturing. The Japanese government encouraged Toyoda to begin making cars as an effort to support the war against China. In 1934, the company produced its first Type A Engine, which takes inspiration from Dodge and Chevrolet models. By 1937, Toyota Motor Co. was established as a separate company. Even as the car brand became a worldwide name, Toyoda Automatic Loom Works still produces automatic looms (although models today are more digital than traditional sewing machines.)
Since the creation of Toyota Motor Co., the company has been as powerful a vehicle force as Japanese competitor Honda. Toyota’s reach has extended to quality manufacturing plants all across America.
